چکیده

The enhancement and detection of elongated structures in noisy image data is relevant for many biomedical imaging applications. To handle complex crossing structures in 2D images, 2D orientation scores U : R×S → C were introduced, which already showed their use in a variety of applications. Here we extend this work to 3D orientation scores U : R × S → C. First, we construct the orientation score from a given dataset, which is achieved by an invertible coherent state type of transform. For this transformation we introduce 3D versions of the 2D cake-wavelets, which are complex wavelets that can simultaneously detect oriented structures and oriented edges. Here we introduce two types of cake-wavelets, the first uses a discrete Fourier transform, the second is designed in the 3D generalized Zernike basis, allowing us to calculate analytical expressions for the spatial filters. Finally, we show two applications of the orientation score transforM.H.J. Janssen CASA, Eindhoven University of Technology, Tel.: +31-40-2478897, E-mail: [email protected] A.J.E.M. In the first application we propose an extension of crossing-preserving coherence enhancing diffusion via our invertible orientation scores of 3D images which we apply to real medical image data. In the second one we develop a new tubularity measure using 3D orientation scores and apply the tubularity measure to both artificial and real medical data.

Line Enhancement and Completion via Linear Left Invariant Scale Spaces on SE(2)

From an image we construct an invertible orientation score, which provides an overview of local orientations in an image. This orientation score is a function on the group SE(2) of both positions and orientations. It allows us to diffuse along multiple local line segments in an image. The transformation from image to orientation score amounts to convolutions with an oriented kernel rotated at m...

Left-invariant Parabolic Evolutions on Se(2) and Contour Enhancement via Invertible Orientation Scores Part Ii: Nonlinear Left-invariant Diffusions on Invertible Orientation Scores

By means of a special type of wavelet unitary transform we construct an orientation score from a grey-value image. This orientation score is a complex-valued function on the 2D Euclidean motion group SE(2) and gives us explicit information on the presence of local orientations in an image. As the transform between image and orientation score is unitary we can relate operators on images to opera...

An Analytical Method for the Detection of Exudates in Retinal Images Using Invertible Orientation Scores

Diabetic retinopathy is an eye related complication of diabetes mellitus caused due to damage to the retinal blood vessels, resulting in micro-aneurysms, hemorrhages and exudates. DR is asymptomatic, necessitating the development of an automated screening system. Exudates appear in the later stages of diabetic retinopathy and their presence would classify the disease as moderate or severe. In d...
